50 Shades of...Blue

Hi there!

Today, the blue sky is hidden behind the clouds, but i'm still going to talk to you about the colour blue today! ! What does the colour blue evoke in you? ... maybe a sense of freshness or calm, or why not even a beautiful exotic cocktail made with Curacao?

I'll talk about the symbolism of this colour, and all the other colours in different articles you can read..but for the moment here is the one that's the most calming colours in the spectrum .. BLUE

When you imagine the colour blue, you automatically think about the sky don't you? But the colour blue is very diversified and stretches from the lightest sky blue to the deepest dark blue, passing through cyan blue, ultramarine, and indigo to name just a few nuances.

The colour blue is associated with the fifth chakra, the one called the throat chakra. It's located at the hollow of the neck. This chakra manages the throat and neck, arms and hands. It's associated with listening to one's intuition and thus to abundance. It's also connected to creativity.

As you can probably guess, this colour is intimately linked with breathing and oxygenation, as well as all that affects the voice and speech and will to speak or not to speak, the thyroid and the ears!

Some therapeutic qualities of Blue

Blue is a fresh and relaxing colour, with calming qualities. In chromotherapy it's used to cool and freshen against burns, irritations and inflammations of all kinds.

It's tranquillising qualities help lower blood pressure sometimes as effectively as taking pharmaceutical drugs! .. By the way did you see Grey's Anatomy last week?

In episode 18 of season 15 (entitled Add it Up) the head of cardiac surgery conducts clinical trials on the arterial effect of several types of mood rooms ... one of the rooms is fully bathed in light blue!

Blue used in Art

I can't do an article on the colour blue, and not mention the monochromist painter Yves Klein!

In wikipedia it says that "Yves Klein turns to monochrome because it's the only way for him to paint to" see what the absolute has visible ".

Yves Klein adopts ultramarine blue as a vehicle. From this bluer than blue, to which he gives the name "IKB" (International Klein Blue), radiates a colourful vibration that engages not only the spectator's gaze: it's the mind that sees with the eyes. "

Other artists had blue phases like Matisse

and Pablo Picasso (here in an autoportrait)

Blue in Publicity

As I said at the beginning blue makes us think of the sky, but also water, the sea, space, the air and everything connected to travelling. It's not by chance that blue is used in advertising to represent escape, travel (travel agencies); frozen food products and ice, laundry and softener products, then beauty products such as Nivea cold cream and refreshing after-sun products are always blue!

Blue in Textile Art and Embroidery

Japan and the Japanese are very fond of the colour blue. You only have to look at the photos of their fabrics dyed with Indigo - called Shibori. It's a form of "tye and dye" dyeing where the fabric is tied into balls or folded to create unique white markings on a blue background.

For embroidery they use these blue fabrics to stitch Sashiko..also with a white thread on a blue background

In France there are also "blue" cities famous for their pastel or indigo dyes like Lectoure amongst others. Several cities in the Cocagne part of the country form a triangle between Toulouse, Albi and Carcassonne..This area is better known as the Historic Pastel Road ... each shade is more beautiful than the last one!

The best known DMC blue threads are numbers 826 and 996..or the Fil Atalie Pacifique, Opale or Encre !

And you...
  • Do you like the colour blue?
  • Do you often stitch with blue thread?
  • What do you feel when you see blue?
  • When you dress in blue, how do you feel?

I'd be very happy to know your answers to my questions about the color blue. Write them in the comments or in an email if you prefer: tometlily@hotmail.com
